We are delighted that Bryony Rose Jennings is returning to The Privett Centre to teach again. Her work is beautifully mesmerising and this is the perfect opportunity to slow down and settle in, immersing yourself in the tranquil environment of the centre and amongst creative companionship.
During this 2 day workshop, with the guidance of textile sculptor Bryony Rose Jennings you will create your very own fairy mouse. Bryony describes her approach as building with textiles and sculpting with stitch. This workshop is a great introduction to her unique approach. Fairy mice are one genus of Bryony’s distinctive mice sculptures. Fairy mice have the gift of wings and soft velvet covered hands and feet. They are often adorned with antique lace and silk tutu’s or pantaloons, but your mouse can be adorned in whatever manner you choose! We start by constructing our mouse body using a basic pattern, we then create the limbs over a wire armature. We use stitch to bring these elements together, looking at ways we can suggest movement and poise. We then add features; eyes, nose, ears. Bryony will bring a range of ready made eyes and alternatives. You can choose to utilise alternative media or found objects; beads, buttons, haberdashery, ephemera and natural objects.
As our mice take shape, a little character starts to suggest itself, as if by magic our creations develop personality and their own story. Fabric is carefully chosen and applied to add pattern, texture or colour, stitched directly to the body using a naïve version of appliqué. The final addition of wings makes them the perfect addition to a festive display or to pass on as a special gift.
Participants are invited to bring their own treasured fabrics, haberdashery and small found objects to work with. Time-worn cloth, fragments of clothing, old linens or fabrics with a personal history can add depth and meaning to a piece. Buttons, beads, trinkets or natural objects may also find new purpose as features or details. Working with materials that already carry a story can enrich the making process, allowing each creature to become not only a sculpture, but a quiet holder of memory and association.
This workshop is suitable for those with some hand-sewing experience who enjoy slow, immersive making. Patience, curiosity and a willingness to experiment are key, with the most engaging results often emerging through play, chance and discovery.
The workshop runs from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm each day with an hours break for lunch.
